Program: Spring Native Plant Propagation

Plant propagation is both a science and an art. The science of plant propagation requires a knowledge of plant physiology, nursery cultural practices, and characteristics of the particular plant that you want to grow.

Learn spring methods for propagating your favorite native (and other perennial) plants. Jeff Weiss will show how to bring seeds out of cold stratification, plant in seed trays and transplant seedlings. His talk will also include making hardwood cuttings, dividing plants, and starting new plants from suckers, rhizomes and stolons.

This program is part of Wild Ones Sustainable Landscaping Speaker Series. Wild Ones Lake-To-Prairie Chapter serves northeast Illinois counties, Lake County, McHenry County, and northern Cook County, and southeast Wisconsin.

Speaker: Jeff Weiss

Jeff Weiss is an ecologist who lives in Buffalo Grove and has taught native plant propagation and ecology classes at The Morton Arboretum and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He earned a master’s degree in natural resources and environmental science from UIUC. Jeff founded the Buffalo Grove Environmental Action Team and the Buffalo Creek Clean Water Partnership. He is a volunteer steward leader of the Buffalo Grove Prairie Guardians and is currently Membership Chair on the Wild Ones Lake-to-Prairie Chapter board.
