Gardeners are, in many ways, hands-on chemists, and you don’t need a chemistry degree to do the job well! In this talk, we will look at how fertilizers fuel plant growth, how soil pH alters nutrient absorption (and why it changes hydrangea colors!), when and how to use pesticides, and how selective weed killers choose their targets. We’ll even explore the fascinating chemistry of how plants talk to each other when under attack. Finally, we will cover the practical science of safely handling and storing garden products. Speaker: Eric Walters holds a Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry. He worked in the food and pharmaceutical industries for 12 years, then taught medical and pharmacy students for 34 years at Rosalind Franklin University. He inherited his love of gardening from his mother and his maternal grandfather.
